Lectures and Programs
The Accidental Fiber Artist
In this light-hearted program, Barbara presents her journey from national park ranger to circuit rider teacher of weaving and ply-split braiding. She shows her earliest fiber art and progresses to her present award-winning work, with a lot of interesting and humorous stops along the way.
Appropriate for conferences and general audiences of varied interests.
Design Tricks
This user-friendly discussion of color theories, proportion, and coordination of design elements will encourage you to go beyond the recipe and develop your own personal weaving style. For groups of 25 or less, a hands-on color exercise can be included for an additional fee.
Appropriate for all levels and interests.
A Fiber Artist’s Mailbox
Some things just can’t be sent by email. Fiber artists’ and weavers’ greeting cards are special gems, and many examples from a large collection are shown in this lecture. Suggestions for materials, card design, and construction will be presented. Audience members are encouraged to bring handwoven or other fiber art cards to display.
Appropriate for all levels and interests.
Multiple Warp Design
Why be restricted to only one warp? A second, or even third, warp can be used in many different ways to embellish a cloth. From stripes to networked designs, from large scale patterns to tiny dots, this lecture will convince you that the extra time spent in warping is worth the effort.
Appropriate for experienced weavers.
Putting It All Together: Mixed Media and Collaborations
Go beyond your comfort zone by combining one or more of the fiber techniques you do into one sensational piece, and learn ways to approach the rewarding experience of collaborating with other artists, no matter the media and no matter if you live close to each other or a great distance apart. Exercises include developing ideas for a mixed media piece and brainstorming collaborative pieces with another person.
For those who do at least one other fiber technique in addition to weaving.
What’s In a Name Block?
Name drafting allows you to design commemorative motifs without the appearance of actual letters. Learn the mechanics of name drafting in overshot and other weave structures, and satisfy that urge for sentimentality with sophistication.
Appropriate for experienced weavers.
